What is Dementia?

.
Global statistics on dementia are alarming. According to the WHO, 50 million people in the world live with the condition and 10 million new cases add to the count every year. If these figures were referring to efforts in curbing a health threat on the global population, we would have to admit that we are achieving little. After all, the world population records around 7.7 billion people today.

We are, however, speaking about a whopping 50 million persons living with a syndrome that compromises the quality of their lives. Dementia patients rely on a carer, have to forego their daily work commitments, and cannot perform their daily life tasks normally. It is a disabling condition. What's more, dementia is listed 7th among the top leading causes of death.

What is Alzheimer's?

.
Alzheimer's points to the neurodegenerative disease that is termed after the German physician, Dr. Alois Alzheimer. Around 1906, the medical practitioner paid attention to a 51-year-old female patient. The woman had manifested an atypical mental illness symptomized in loss of memory, difficulty in language, and erratic behaviour. After her death, the German physician examined her brain and discovered that the presenting symptoms were caused by a combination of abnormal masses (amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibre (neurofibrillary).

With his discovery, the German physician named the two basic features which, together with the lack of connections between the brain cells, are used to describe Alzheimer's Disease (AD) today.
